It's fun and it's not. To avoid unnecessary speculations: the man, who lives the life of the nomad, wears his sock, despite it being just the one. He hasn't given up on the pair of socks. He keeps washing the one sock, until he finds the other one...maybe it's gone forever. That's a matter of interpretation.
